FAQ

No. Previous guiding experience is valuable but not essential. We welcome licensed guides, language professionals, cultural enthusiasts, lifelong learners and others with a genuine interest in Kyoto's cultural heritage. Applications are reviewed individually based on each applicant's experience, interests and suitability for the programme.

Training is conducted in Japanese, as participants learn directly from representatives of participating temples and cultural institutions. Applicants must therefore have sufficient Japanese proficiency to understand the training and communicate effectively with those involved. Assessments are conducted in both Japanese and English to confirm that participants can understand each facility's official guidance and communicate it accurately and respectfully to international visitors.

The programme combines classroom learning, assignments, role-play, on-site training, practical OJT and assessment. Participants study official information and guidance standards supervised by each facility, including its history, traditions, visitor etiquette, designated routes, photography rules and cultural property protection requirements. The duration varies depending on the selected facility and training schedule, and details will be provided before training begins.

Participants must complete the required training, assignments, role-play, on-site OJT and practical assessments in Japanese and English. Those who meet the programme standards are certified by CEC and registered in its guide network. As each temple or cultural institution has its own content and requirements, guides must complete the relevant facility-specific training before being assigned there.

When a suitable guiding request is received, CEC selects and contacts registered guides based on factors such as language ability, expertise, facility-specific training and availability. Registration does not guarantee a particular number of assignments, working days or level of compensation. The fee, schedule, responsibilities, transportation expenses and other conditions are provided separately for each assignment.

Yes. Registered guides may be asked to participate in further training, updated facility briefings or refresher assessments to maintain the accuracy and quality of their guiding. Because visitor rules and official information may change, guides are expected to keep their knowledge current and follow the latest guidance provided by CEC and participating facilities.
